How cadet units are funded

1. Federal government support

The cadet program is largely funded by the Department of National Defence (DND), which covers the following:

Salaries of training officers: the officers in charge of cadet units are paid for their supervisory and teaching role.
Uniforms and equipment: cadets receive their uniforms free of charge, along with the equipment needed for activities.
Training and activities: DND funds summer training, specialized courses and some local or regional activities.
Facilities: cadet unit premises, often located in armouries, are maintained and made available by DND.

The Cadet Leagues (Navy, Army and Air) are national civilian organizations that support the program.

Purpose: they complement DND's support by promoting the programs, providing additional funding and overseeing local committees.
Financial role: the Leagues can provide financial or logistical support for specific projects or needs not covered by DND.

Every cadet unit is paired with a local support committee made up of volunteers (often parents and members of the community).

Fundraising: these committees organize fundraising activities (Yule log sales, car washes, donation drives, etc.) to meet local financial needs.
Use of funds: the money raised pays for:
- special activities not covered by DND (outings, competitions, trips);
- snacks or meals during local activities;
- transportation costs for certain events;
- prizes and awards for cadets (medals, trophies, etc.);
- additional equipment to enhance the cadet experience.

Cadet units sometimes receive financial or material support from private donors, local businesses or municipalities:

Cash donations: from individuals, businesses or foundations.
In-kind support: for example, a business may donate supplies or offer a free venue for an activity.
Municipal grants: some municipalities provide funding or discounts on the use of their facilities.

Public funds from DND may not be used for activities that are not directly approved by the cadet program.
Funds raised by the sponsoring committee must be managed transparently, with accounts audited regularly.
Every fundraising activity must follow the guidelines of the Leagues and of the cadet program.

Funding cadet units is a collective effort:

Federal government: provides the foundation of the program (staff, uniforms, training).
National leagues: add funding for specific needs.
Support committees and the community: local funding for enriching activities.

This balanced system lets cadets enjoy a rich program while involving families and communities in their support and success.
